I purchased recently upgraded from Windows Vista home basic 64 to Windows 7 home Premium 64. After upgrading I installed a new Hitachi 2TB Sata Hard drive. Device management recognizes the HD, Disk Management can not find the HD, ' My computer' doesn't see the HD. Bios Does show the HD. Please note this is not a USB external HD. It is an Internal HD. No error messages.
So far I have tried: Checking connections. Reinstalling Win 7 64, Attempted to reformat it with disk management but as it doesn't show I cant do this ( as per other suggestions found in these and other forums.) Things I have yet to try: Unplugging my Primary HD and installing Win7 32 on the 2TB hd( currently my secondary) then plugging everything back up and installing Win7 64 again on the primary HD ( suggested on an other forum) Any help would be appriciated. And an OFFICIAL answer, as I have yet to see a Microsoft rep give any other responce other then directing us to other dead end post/help links. Hi Nydirech, If you facing the S-ATA (Serial ATA) hard disk not found and not detected problem, here’s a few steps and suggestions that you may take to identify what exactly is the cause of the problem, and its possible solutions or workarounds. Some SATA chipset especially older version requires driver for the Operating System(OS) setup to recognize the SATA drive. Make sure you have a copy of driver from the manufacturer ready. For those without SATA/RAID driver, it’s also possible to disable SATA RAID option in the BIOS.
OS normally has native SATA driver (except old on as specified above), and thus able to detect the SATA disks. Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) mode on SATA hard drive also requires appropriate drivers in. Disable AHCI or change SATA mode to Integrated Drive Electronics(IDE) emulation mode in BIOS so that SATA hard drive will work as just a normal hard drive utilizing native SATA driver in Windows or other OS. BIOS DISCLAIMER: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. Hard disk drives are accessed over one of a number of bus types, including parallel ATA Serial. The earliest hard disk drive (HDD) interfaces were bit serial data interfaces. Enhanced Small Disk Interface (ESDI) was an attempt to minimize controller. At least 221 companies, see List of defunct hard disk. I had the same problem. Step 2 here worked for me. STEP 2 Check the Drive Partition in Disk Management Even though the drive may not be visible on the 'Desktop' or in 'My Computer,' check to see if the drive is recognized in 'Disk Management.' . Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage' from the menu. From the 'Computer Management' window select 'Disk Management' from the menu on the left. In 'Disk Management' check to see if the drive is visible.

If the drive is found, look at the partition for the drive. New drives will be labeled as FAT32 and have a drive letter assigned.
If the drive does not display as 'Healthy,' or shows the file format as 'RAW,' then the partition has become corrupt. It could also be corrupt if the bar above the drive is black and shows as 'Unallocated.' . To make the drive usable again after a partition has become corrupt or lost start by right clicking on the drive in 'Disk Management' and select 'Delete partition' from the menu.
Then right click on the drive again and select 'create partition' from the menu. Follow the steps in the partition wizard to create a Primary partition. NOTE: Deleting the partition will cause all data on the drive to be lost. If the partition has become corrupt this may be unavoidable. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is not responsible for lost data. It is highly recommended that data be backed up in multiple locations on multiple drives to minimize data loss.
After the new primary partition has been created 'Disk Management' will display the drive with an NTFS partition. The NTFS partition is unusable on a Mac. If the drive is used on Macintosh and Windows computers, follow the link below to obtain a FAT32 formatting tool which will allow both Windows and Macintosh users to use the drive. Notice many people are having this problem. I was having this problem too so i came back to try to help out others with this problem. The fix that worked for me was downloading DiskPart unto a Cd, loading up win 7 installer and press shift 10 to bring up the command prompt and type diskpart. Go to microsofts website to see the steps.
I did a clean install and it was working within 5 minutes no lie. Donno if u need to chose the other 'clean all' option. Which takes an hour per 320 GB. But is safer.
